Métis Medicine Pouch
This handmade heirloom medicine pouch is beaded in a contemporary Cree-Métis style onto moosehide and finished with hide lacing and horsehair fringes. Medicine pouches have long been used to carry traditional medicines. They play a sacred role for Indigenous peoples, tying them to community, Creator and their spiritual selves. This medicine pouch, like all of BeadingMedicine’s pouches, is one-of-a-kind. The Métis beadwork speaks to the indomitable spirit of Métis people as mixed race people who walk both among and between two worlds. This journey of blending can be seen in Beading Machine owner Stephanie Chambers’s work, in which she combines European and Cree motifs and techniques into a new point of view and form of expression.
