Rattan Basket Wall Decor Set

According to Calgary rattan-weaving artist Jenny Cheng, “The world inside weaving natural fibres like rattan is endless.” Her wall-decor placemats are all handwoven with rattan straw from Indonesia and feature intricate patterns that show her meticulous weaving techniques. She’s self-taught and learned rattan weaving from watching YouTube videos. To make the placemats, Cheng soaks the rattan straws in water so they’re malleable, and continuously sprays them with water to prevent snapping as she weaves. To get different colours like the dark brown colour, Cheng uses natural dyes like coffee. She submerges the rattan placemats, sometimes using leftover coffee from Deville Coffee, in a pot and boils them at high temperatures for a few hours. The results are lightweight, natural art pieces that appear to float on your wall, all made from eco-friendly natural fibres that can be arranged to your own liking.
